Yes, an air quality test from our company can detect if there is mould present in the air or on surfaces. There are 2 tests that are frequently performed including non-viable mould testing and using a particle meter. 

How do you test for mould in the air?

The main way in which we do this is through non-viable mould testing. This is where we run a pump which will collect a “snapshot” example of what is in the air. The cassette which has the sample collected on it is sent to the lab and it is analysed to find the levels of mould as well as the species which is growing. 

This information is useful because it can show you a story of how the mould is growing in your home. For example, if it is a similar mould to growing outside, you may be able to conclude that the mould spores may be migrating inside and causing mould growth when it comes into contact with moisture in the home such as water damage. 

Usually a qualified home inspector, indoor environmental professional, building biologist or occupational hygienist will be the person to collect these samples for you. They will have the experience to know which samples and how many need to be taken. 

How can I test the air quality in my home?

As mentioned above, the best way to do this is through non-viable mould sampling with a qualified professional. However, there is a DIY mould test kit available on the market today which you can use to take the mould samples yourself. If you use a mould test kit, make sure you get one which uses a cassette that can be sent into a laboratory for analysis.

There is another way which you can test the air quality in your home, you can use a particle counter. Mould spores in the air can be indicated through particle counts. Basically the instrument can be moved throughout the property and when the particle counts spike, this could indicate where the mould is growing. 

It is important to note, this is an indicative measure only. It will only indicate that the area “may have mould damage.” It is common practice to then conduct a mould test in the area which the particle counter has picked up as being high levels.
